Opera Debuts Stablecoin Wallet MiniPay In Africa

The mobile web browser Opera has announced intentions to introduce a non-custodial stablecoin wallet that will be accessible to its African user base.

The web services provider unveiled the MiniPay wallet integration on September 13; it is based on the Celo blockchain and enables customers in Africa to send or receive stablecoins using their pre-existing mobile numbers.

With 17 years of operations under its belt, Opera now has more than 100 million users on the continent. The rollout of MiniPay will start in Nigeria in the upcoming months.

Opera’s executive vice president for mobile, Jørgen Arnesen, has raised concerns about high fees, unreliable service uptimes, lack of transparency, and access to mobile data among users in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and South Africa.

MiniPay, a new wallet, offers sub-cent fees, onboard and backup wallets via Google credentials, and integrates with local payment methods like Airtime and MPesa, allowing users to add and withdraw stablecoins into local currency.
