In Maharashtra, Blockchain Will Decide RTO Inspectors Transfer
Transport department officials in Maharashtra plan to use a blockchain-based computerized system for the transfers of Regional Transport Office (RTO) inspectors, preventing corruption. This comes after a “cash-for-transfers” scam emerged in March following an audio clip of a conservation between a woman and a person.
Eknath Shinde, the chief minister and minister in charge of transportation, has ordered that all transfers of RTO inspectors be done exclusively “online” in order to prevent fraud.
Every year, transfers of RTO inspectors, including MVI and AMVI, are a topic of corruption. Union minister Nitin Gadkari has referred to malpractices at RTOs as “Laxmi darshan.” In March, Maharashtra experienced a “cash-for-transfers” scam after an audio clip of a woman RTO inspector and a person surfaced. Offices with a high number of non-transport vehicles and busy border check posts are considered plum postings, where inspectors use influence and money to get transferred. In addition to hiring a private company to develop blockchain-based software for online transfers, preparations are also being made for a database of service histories for qualified inspectors. The use of blockchain technology will significantly reduce manipulation.
