Armed Forces & War In Metaverse

By Vishakha Thakur

The history of armed forces is filled with the stories of bravery and velour, wins and defeats, despair and agony, depicting the worst outcome, which continue to haunt mankind.

Who can forget the destruction of Hiroshima, Nagasaki caused by modern time warfare? The dropping of the Atomic bomb has not just wiped the city from global space literally, but etched a permanent mark – the deadliest conflict experienced by mankind – World War II.

Extensive damage caused by WWII…. more than 70 million fatalities and the economies of more than 50 countries involved, bore the brunt of the war, which was fought on land, sea and air in nearly every part of the world.

Imagine, if the world has to face another war now? Dreaded by this idea … .the propensity of damage can be disastrous. Armed forces are always war ready and for that they need practice. Now, they can fight wars with minimum consequences in virtual space or for that matter relieve World War II in the metaverse….let’s see how?

Well, the armed forces are adopting metaverse technology to enhance capabilities. Yes, an interesting report by global data says that military forces across the Asia-Pacific region are embracing metaverse as it is being considered a valuable tool for training, logistics, battle management and frontline service. According to the report, potential applications of metaverse in warfare can generate $627bn in revenue by 2030.

The traditional military strategies are evolving and there is a great demand for innovative approaches. Countries such as China, Singapore, and South Korea are at the forefront of incorporating metaverse into their military blueprints.

So let’s understand what these countries are upto….

China is heavily investing in its military metaverse and China’s People’s Liberation Army is exploring the idea of metaverse-based warfare where it can attack an opponent’s metaverse to cripple their control, communications, command etc.

Now if we talk about Singapore and South Korea….

Both the countries have ventured into Advanced Tactical Augmented Reality System training solution offered by Red 6, which is a US based company focused on developing AR based combat training systems. Well, ATARS is integrated in the US Air Force’s T-38C Trainer Jet and enhances efficiency, quality and safety. Also, it provides in-air combat training through AR headsets. In the future, Singapore and South Korea plan to use M-346 and T-50 trainers of Red 6.
