Users update the PayMe app and activate a RedCoin wallet with no separate account opening process and no minimum balance required. The stablecoin enables instant peer-to-peer HK dollar transfers and payments at more than 100,000 merchants already integrated into the PayMe platform.
HSBC’s Regulatory Framework
HSBC holds stablecoin issuer license FRS02 from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, granted in April 2026. The HKMA has issued only two stablecoin permits: one to HSBC for RedCoin and one to the Anchorpoint joint venture led by Standard Chartered, which is also pursuing retail stablecoin access.
More countries will start to realize that issuing a local stablecoin increases demand for their currency, and in-turn their government bonds. USD have a huge lead already.

HSBC completed a tokenized deposits pilot on the Canton Network earlier in 2026 and has recorded US$8.3 billion in tokenized bonds globally and US$2.5 billion in tokenized gold trading value in Hong Kong, building an extensive base of institutional tokenization experience ahead of the retail launch.
Upcoming Features & Tokenized Finance Plans
HSBC plans to integrate RedCoin into its main Hong Kong mobile banking app before the end of 2026. That integration will enable customers to subscribe to tokenized investments, beginning with an HK dollar money market fund accessible from just HK$100, approximately US$12.75. Tokenized gold and third-party fund products are planned to follow in subsequent phases.
Lawrence Li, head of PayMe, said the first phase prioritizes winning customer trust through a seamless experience. Merchant settlement initially follows existing HK dollar schedules with faster settlement expected in later rollout phases.
