Trump’s $800M WLFI Stake Gets A 2028 Unlock Timeline

Donald Trump’s roughly $800 million stake in World Liberty Financial’s WLFI token now has a possible path to becoming sellable in 2028. Six wallets holding founder-linked WLFI tokens entered a new vesting contract in May, creating a timetable for previously locked tokens to become available. One of those wallets holds about 14 billion WLFI after a required token burn, matching the amount disclosed as Trump’s founder allocation. The new schedule includes a two-year cliff, meaning the first unlock would not take place until 2028. The development comes as US lawmakers consider tougher crypto ethics rules.

The vesting arrangement gives investors and the wider crypto market a clearer picture of when large insider holdings of WLFI could potentially enter the market.

According to blockchain data, six wallets holding World Liberty Financial insider allocations moved their tokens into a vesting contract in May. The arrangement replaced an indefinite lockup with a defined timetable.

One of the wallets holds around 14 billion WLFI following the required token burn. That figure corresponds to the amount previously disclosed as President Donald Trump’s founder allocation in the family-linked crypto venture.

Based on the current WLFI price, the stake is worth roughly $800 million. However, the tokens are not immediately available for sale.

The vesting contract includes a two-year cliff. This means the first unlock would not happen until 2028. After the cliff, the tokens would continue to vest over a further three-year period.

The new arrangement has emerged at an important time for US crypto policy. The latest version of the proposed Clarity Act includes tougher ethics rules that would require senior government officials with significant crypto holdings to either sell those interests or place them in a qualified blind trust.

Trump has reportedly agreed to the revised provision, which has become one of the major issues in discussions over the legislation.

However, the new WLFI vesting arrangement does not necessarily appear to have been created because of the proposed legislation. The wallets entered the vesting contract months before the latest ethics language appeared in the Clarity Act.

World Liberty Financial had also published the terms of the mechanism before the wallets entered the new schedule.

On May 19, the six wallets transferred a total of 30 billion WLFI into the vesting contract. Under the arrangement, 10% of the tokens had to be destroyed when the tokens entered the new schedule.

The proposal that created the vesting mechanism was approved around May 6, with support from 11,537 wallets. It gave founder-token holders the option to move from an indefinite lockup to a two-year cliff followed by three years of vesting.

Participation in the arrangement was optional. Holders who did not join the new schedule would continue to have their tokens locked indefinitely.

World Liberty Financial spokesman David Wachsman said the community had voted in favour of a founder token burn. He said the co-founders moved their tokens into a smart contract that carried out the burn, while the governance proposal imposed the strictest conditions and longest vesting period on founder holdings.

The largest wallet deposited 15.75 billion WLFI and retained 14.175 billion after the required burn. That amount matches Trump’s disclosed allocation. Two other wallets deposited 3.75 billion WLFI each, while three wallets deposited 2.25 billion each.
