Visa is combining its VisaNet settlement data with onchain lending infrastructure to help stablecoin-linked card programmes and fintech companies access working capital. The move could give lenders a clearer view of the money owed to card programmes after transactions settle, while authorised onchain data could help assess credit performance and automate parts of settlement financing.

Visa said more than 160 stablecoin-linked card programmes now operate on its network, with payment volume up nearly 200% year over year. The company has already tested the model with decentralised lending platform Credit Coop.

The idea addresses a problem faced by newer payment companies. Traditional lenders can be reluctant to provide working capital to emerging fintech businesses because they may lack a long operating history, sufficient scale or the financial records needed for conventional credit assessments.

Under Visa’s model, lenders can access information about a card programme’s settlement receivables, which represent money that the programme is due after card payments clear. With customer permission, this information can be combined with onchain transaction records to give lenders a more complete picture of the business.

The system could also make settlement financing more automated. Instead of relying entirely on manual underwriting and traditional financial processes, smart contracts and onchain infrastructure can be used to manage funding, collateral and repayments.

Visa has been testing an early version of the approach with Credit Coop, a decentralised lending platform that uses smart contracts for these functions. According to Visa, the model has supported more than $2.5 billion in cumulative financed settlement volume since 2023.

The company said participating facilities have recorded zero defaults so far. More than 3,000 borrowing events and 9,000 repayment events have also been processed programmatically onchain.

The development comes as Visa and other major payment companies increasingly explore stablecoins as part of global payment infrastructure. Visa said the number of stablecoin-linked card programmes on its network has continued to grow rapidly, with payment volume almost tripling from a year earlier.

For stablecoin-based payment businesses, access to working capital can be just as important as access to customers and payment networks. By combining its traditional payment data with blockchain-based lending infrastructure, Visa is looking to make it easier for these businesses to finance their settlement cycles.

The move also shows how traditional financial infrastructure and onchain finance are beginning to work together rather than operating as completely separate systems.
