MoneyGram is bringing its crypto-to-cash service to Solana, expanding its blockchain strategy by connecting digital wallets and stablecoins with its global cash network. The company’s MoneyGram Ramps service is now available to wallets, exchanges and developers building on Solana. It allows users to convert digital assets into local currency through MoneyGram’s network, while people can also deposit cash to gain access to supported digital assets. The service allows withdrawals from more than 170 countries and territories and cash deposits in more than 25 nations.

The action is an element of MoneyGram’s larger initiative to integrate blockchain-based payments with its conventional money-transfer network. Instead of requiring every crypto wallet or application to establish its own relationships with banks and cash providers, Ramps provides an existing connection to MoneyGram’s network.

For a person holding crypto in a supported wallet, this means the digital assets can be converted into local currency and collected through the available MoneyGram network. The reverse process is also possible, allowing users to put cash into the system and access digital assets.

MoneyGram sees this as particularly relevant as stablecoins move beyond their traditional role in crypto trading. Dollar-pegged digital tokens are increasingly being explored for payments and remittances, with fintech companies, banks and payment firms looking at ways to use them for cross-border transfers.

Stablecoins can potentially move money across borders without requiring every transaction to pass through a chain of traditional correspondent banks. For MoneyGram, blockchain infrastructure offers a way to improve the speed and efficiency of international transfers while keeping the customer experience relatively familiar.

The company serves roughly 60 million active customers and has spent several years building links between its traditional payment network and digital assets.

MoneyGram first took a major step in this direction in 2022, when it launched a service with the Stellar Development Foundation that allowed users to move between cash and Circle’s USDC stablecoin through its retail network. That gave crypto wallets a physical way to bring digital dollars into the traditional cash economy or convert them back into cash.

The company has continued to expand that strategy. MoneyGram unveiled MGUSD, a stablecoin backed by dollars, in June. The Stellar network powers the stablecoin, which is issued by Bridge, Stripe’s stablecoin infrastructure firm.

MoneyGram has also been building a closer relationship with Solana. In June, the company became a validator on the network, helping process and secure transactions.

Its latest move brings another part of the company’s payment infrastructure onto Solana. MoneyGram Ramps can now be used by businesses and developers building applications on the network, potentially making it easier for those applications to connect users with physical cash services.
