One of the most anticipated regulation proposals for the cryptocurrency sector has been delayed until at least September by the US Senate’s decision to postpone its vote on the CLARITY Act until after the August vacation. While Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong openly pushed senators to advance the measure right once, Senate Majority Leader John Thune confirmed the delay, citing the lack of Democratic support. Armstrong said that millions of Americans were waiting for regulatory certainty and that years of talks had already resulted in a wide bipartisan accord.

It is anticipated that the Senate will depart Washington without addressing the legislation pertaining to the structure of the cryptocurrency market, delaying the discussion until mid-September when legislators return. Despite months of discussions, Democratic senators were not ready to support a vote before to the vacation, according to Senate Majority Leader John Thune.

“The Dems are insistent on no CLARITY vote,” Thune stated, noting that Republicans planned to make the measure one of the Senate’s top objectives upon returning from the August vacation and that Senator Cynthia Lummis had worked hard on it.

By explicitly dividing regulatory authority between the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), the CLARITY Act aims to provide a complete federal framework for digital asset markets. Many people see the law as a significant step toward giving cryptocurrency companies doing business in the US much-needed legal stability.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong urged legislators to take action on X just before the Senate’s procedural deadline ran out. “Millions of Americans own cryptocurrency and are watching,” he stated in his piece. Now is the time to vote. Armstrong further argued that the Senate had spent more than a year working on the bill, saying, “No one gets everything.” Most people receive what they require. The final challenge, he continued, was not policy differences but rather whether certain politicians would keep postponing legislation that already had widespread support from both parties.

But due to procedural constraints, the Senate was no longer able to arrange a floor vote before to the recess. Because the necessary cloture motion had not been filed within the specified time, the Senate’s procedures effectively precluded the possibility of an August vote.

Industry leaders expressed their displeasure with the hold-up. The CEO of the Crypto Council for Innovation, Ji Hun Kim, said that the absence of a clear legal framework pushes innovation overseas, putting American consumers at risk. Supporters think the bill is still in a strong position to be considered when the Senate reconvenes, despite the setback.

The digital asset business is frustrated by the delay, but it does not mean that the law will be resolved. The CLARITY Act can proceed without restarting the legislative process because it is still on the Senate’s legislative schedule. The focus will now turn to September, when MPs are anticipated to pick up where they left off in their discussions and try to get the historic crypto legislation to a floor vote.
