The U.S. military reportedly continued using Anthropic’s Claude AI model in operations related to recent strikes on Iran, even after President Donald Trump ordered a ban on federal use of the company’s technology.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Claude was integrated into U.S. Central Command workflows to assist with intelligence analysis, identifying potential targets and simulating battlefield scenarios, demonstrating how deeply some AI tools have been embedded in defense operations.

Trump’s directive came amid a dispute between the Pentagon and Anthropic over access to and control of its advanced AI models. The administration demanded unrestricted use of the technology, which the company resisted, leading to the ban.

Despite the order, current military systems remain dependent on Claude, and the Pentagon has been granted a six-month transition period to phase out its use.

Claude’s involvement in earlier high-profile missions, including aiding the capture of Venezuela’s president, highlights its strategic value. The situation underscores tensions between rapid AI adoption in defense and government control over emerging technologies.

In response, the Pentagon began lining up replacement providers, reaching an agreement with OpenAI to deploy its AI models on classified military networks.

OpenAI said on Friday it is raising $110bn in a blockbuster funding round that would value the ChatGPT maker at $840bn, in a deal that signals the feverish pace of investment in artificial intelligence.
