The U.S. government has struck a deal with OpenAI to offer ChatGPT Enterprise to all federal agencies for just $1 per agency, part of a sweeping effort to modernize public services.

Announced by the General Services Administration, the initiative supports the Biden administration’s AI Action Plan aimed at enhancing efficiency, innovation, and leadership in artificial intelligence.

The AI tool is expected to streamline workflows, automate routine tasks, and improve decision-making across departments. However, the integration has sparked debate over privacy, cybersecurity, and the risk of over-reliance on automated systems.

Critics warn that without strict oversight, large language models could compromise sensitive data and threaten civil liberties. The U.S. Space Force previously paused use of generative AI due to national security concerns.

For AI adoption to succeed, officials stress the need for improved data governance and secure architectures. Still, the $1 symbolic cost underscores the government’s commitment to wide-scale digital transformation via AI.
