Romania Harnesses AI For Data-Driven Policy

Countries all over the world are grappling with the pervasiveness of artificial intelligence (AI). While some are concerned about emerging technology, others, such as Romania, embrace it.

Romanian officials have introduced Ion, an AI-powered robot designed to improve the government’s understanding of public concerns.

The bot gathers information through automated scans of social media, a specific hashtag, and messages from the public via an online platform set up for this purpose. The information is then compiled into reports for government officials.

Since the project’s inception in March, at least one report has been generated from the data, according to the developers. It is expected to be upgraded this summer, allowing it to provide answers and provide officials with a dashboard to filter data based on various parameters.

This comes as the European Union draughts its AI Act, the bloc’s first comprehensive set of guidelines and regulations for the development and deployment of artificial intelligence. Romania, as one of the EU’s 27 member states, would be subject to any regulations resulting from the AI Act.
