The virtual reality version of Meta’s metaverse platform, Horizon Worlds, will be shut down in June, according to the company’s announcement. Instead, the business will concentrate on creating a mobile-friendly experience.

Users will no longer be able to create or access virtual worlds using Meta’s VR headsets as of June 15. When Horizon Worlds was first introduced in 2021, it was a social virtual reality platform where users could connect, create environments, and utilise their avatars to play games.

But over time, the site found it difficult to draw in large numbers of users. In the meantime, digital social gaming remained dominated by well-known online platforms like Roblox and Fortnite.

According to reports, Meta has been testing a mobile version of Horizon Worlds since 2025. Compared to VR headsets, the business thinks mobile devices will reach a far wider audience.

Additionally, Meta’s metaverse division suffered significant financial losses prior to the decision. Over the previous few years, the company’s Reality Labs division has suffered losses totalling billions of dollars.

Now, Meta is beginning to concentrate on artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge technology. As AI emerges as the next hub of innovation in the computer sector, many major businesses are taking similar actions.

Once very popular in 2021, the metaverse concept has steadily lost steam in recent years.
