The Ethereum Foundation has revealed that a funded security initiative successfully identified 100 North Korean operatives working inside Web3 companies under fake identities.
The effort was part of its ETH Rangers programme, which supports security-focused research. One project, known as Ketman, focused specifically on uncovering fake developers embedded in crypto teams.
Over six months, the project flagged suspicious accounts and alerted more than 50 organisations that they may have unknowingly hired North Korean operatives.
These individuals often use subtle tactics, namely, reused profiles, mismatched language settings and hidden technical clues, to blend in. Their presence poses a serious risk, as insider access can lead to major exploits or data breaches.
Groups like the Lazarus Group have already been linked to billions of dollars in crypto theft over the years.
The findings highlight a growing threat that goes beyond code vulnerabilities. Human infiltration is now emerging as one of the most dangerous attack vectors in the crypto space.
