The week of September 21 to 27 is shaping up as an important positioning period for crypto markets, with a $16.6 billion Deribit quarterly options expiry, a major Plasma XPL token unlock, and Solana’s Alpenglow validator checkpoint all due within days.
After dropping below $76,000 earlier in the week before rising again, Bitcoin is currently trading at $81,300. After the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points on September 16, traders are keeping an eye on economic data and Federal Reserve commentary as the entire value of the cryptocurrency market has returned to $2.88 trillion.
In addition to raising its federal funds goal to 3.75%–4.00%, the Fed’s most recent forecasts maintained the possibility of another rate increase before the end of the year.
$14.73B Bitcoin Options Expiry Arrives Friday
Deribit’s quarterly Bitcoin and Ether options settlement on September 25 at 8:00 UTC is the greatest event in the cryptocurrency market. Ether contributes about $1.92 billion in open interest, while Bitcoin options make up about $14.73 billion across about 186,000 contracts. As a result, the total quarterly expenditure comes to almost $16.6 billion.
A call-heavy market is indicated by the Bitcoin put-call open-interest ratio, which is close to 0.52. Max-pain predictions are still close to $72,000, but large positions are focused around the $70,000, $85,000, and $90,000 strikes.
Plasma XPL Unlock Adds Supply Pressure
September 25 also brings one of the largest token unlocks of the week. Plasma’s tokenomics schedule calls for one-third of its team and investor allocations to unlock one year after its September 25, 2025, mainnet-beta launch.
Independent trackers estimate the release at roughly 1.76 billion to 1.81 billion XPL, equivalent to around 63%-65% of circulating supply and approximately $158 million at prevailing prices. Other notable releases include Humanity Protocol’s roughly 266 million H tokens.
Solana Alpenglow Checkpoint Nears
Solana validators face a key deadline on September 21, when Anza recommends moving to Agave 4.3 ahead of Alpenglow’s targeted mainnet activation beginning September 28.
Alpenglow is designed to reduce Solana’s finality from roughly 12.8 seconds to 150 milliseconds, although activation will depend on the required stake adopting the updated software.
Meanwhile, September 23 brings US and European flash PMI data, followed by US durable goods orders and consumer sentiment on September 25.
