Crypto exchange Luno is reportedly cutting about 20% of its global workforce as it restructures operations and shifts more resources toward institutional clients, financial infrastructure and business-to-business services.
James Lanigan, CEO of Luno, stated in a Bloomberg story on Tuesday that the company has made investments in automation and other general operational enhancements that altered the resources required to operate the business. Luno will invest in compliance, core infrastructure, and retail offerings while cutting expenses in accordance with market conditions.
Luno has reduced its employment more significantly in the past. The exchange reduced its workforce by 35% in January 2023. This measure impacted around 330 workers.
Luno, established in South Africa and owned by Digital Currency Group, provides services to over 16 million consumers in Asia-Pacific and Africa. The business now offers institutional services and infrastructure in addition to retail trading, including crypto infrastructure for banks and fintech companies.
Luno’s justification for the layoffs is consistent with a broader trend in the sector, as many cryptocurrency firms use automation, artificial intelligence, and operational efficiency as justifications for personnel reductions.
A total of 894 positions were impacted by layoffs or restructurings at 12 cryptocurrency and related businesses in July, according to employment tracker CryptoJobsList. In 2026, CryptoJobsList recorded over 7,254 acknowledged job layoffs across 47 firms, with the most common explanation being market circumstances.
Because it includes nearby financial technology businesses and is significantly affected by Block’s 4,000-person cut in February, the data serves as a broad industry indication rather than a definite crypto-only figure.
Exodus, a cryptocurrency wallet business, said earlier in July that it will lay off 25% of its employees while restructuring around a full-stack platform for stablecoin payments and card issuance. According to Exodus, the change might result in yearly operational savings of between $10 million and $13 million.
Blockchain infrastructure developer Gnosis encouraged recruiting firms in engineering, product, design, marketing, developer relations, and customer relations to get in touch with it on Tuesday in order to introduce themselves to former workers impacted by a recent reorganization. After reviewing its consumer-facing Gnosis App, the business announced on July 17 that it has cut staff.
