CME Group has added Ethena’s ENA token to its cryptocurrency benchmark suite, introducing standardised US dollar reference rates across London, New York and Asia-Pacific. The new ENA benchmarks began publishing on August 24 and are administered by CF Benchmarks.

The rates give institutions separate daily pricing points for three major trading regions, while real-time indices provide updated ENA prices during the day. The benchmarks are available every day, including weekends and holidays, reflecting the 24/7 nature of cryptocurrency markets.

The new benchmark suite includes three regional rates: ENAUSD RR for the London close, ENAUSD NY for New York and ENAUSD AP for the Asia-Pacific region.

Each rate is published shortly after 4 p.m. local time. CME says its regional reference rates are calculated using data from eligible constituent exchanges during a defined one-hour window before the relevant market close.

The move addresses one of the challenges created by the always-on nature of crypto trading. Unlike traditional stock markets, cryptocurrencies do not have a single global closing time. Prices continue moving around the clock, making it useful for institutions in different regions to have standardised reference points aligned with their own operating hours.

CF Benchmarks will calculate the ENA rates using trading activity from multiple eligible spot exchanges. This approach is intended to provide a broader market reference instead of relying on prices from a single trading venue.

The benchmarks can be useful for asset managers and fund administrators that need reliable prices for portfolio valuation and net asset value calculations. Trading desks can also use the rates for risk management and other financial processes.

The real-time indices serve a different purpose. They provide updated pricing during the trading day and can be useful for products or applications that require continuous market information.

The addition of ENA also expands CME Group’s coverage beyond the largest cryptocurrencies. Its wider benchmark offering already includes assets such as Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, XRP, Cardano, Chainlink and Stellar Lumens.

For Ethena, the addition is significant because a major traditional financial-market operator is providing institutional pricing infrastructure for its token. Standardised benchmarks can make it easier for financial firms to value ENA and potentially build products around the asset.

The rates may also help improve price discovery as trading activity in digital assets becomes increasingly connected to traditional financial markets.

Importantly, the new benchmarks are pricing products rather than a launch of ENA futures or other tradeable derivatives. Their main purpose is to provide reliable reference prices for the market.

As crypto adoption expands among professional investors, benchmark infrastructure is becoming increasingly important. CME’s decision to add ENA suggests that institutional demand for standardised pricing is spreading beyond Bitcoin and Ether to a wider range of digital assets.
