AI-enabled Fraud: Real Cases, Scammer Tactics & Smart Prevention Tips

Hey, congratulations! You won the Rs 2 Crore lottery.

To withdraw funds, share your bank details along with a one-time password (OTP) received through text message and in 10 seconds the prize money will be in your account! Have you ever received such fraudulent messages or calls? If not you, your friends or relatives must have.

Every single day we hear stories of innocent people getting scammed and becoming victims of such fraudulent calls or messages. You must be wondering if scams have been happening for long why is it that they seem to have increased only now?

Well, as technology is getting advanced, scammers have started using smart Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, making such frauds even more sophisticated.

In fact, AI-enabled scams have proven to be 4.5 times more profitable than traditional scamming methods. In our earlier blogs, we have already discussed how AI can aid in detecting financial frauds and in this one, we will understand how digital finance frauds happen with the help of AI, and the Crypto space is no exception here, and what preventive measures one must take.

What Is AI-enabled Fraud?

AI-enabled fraud happens when scammers use AI to automate the process of deceptive content generation and bypass security protocols to implement the hack.

While traditional frauds are static like website fraud and trademark infringement, AI-enabled frauds allow scammers to use modern techniques and bypass identity checks including deepfake impersonation, wherein images, audios or videos are made using AI to mimic real world identity and content creation.

Manage Victims: AI can help scammers to manipulate hundreds of victims at the same time through automated chatbots.

Enhance Persuasion: With the help of AI, scammers can produce flawless and grammatically correct phishing messages in any language so that the victim can easily get convinced.

Synthetic Identity: Scammers use AI to bypass verification systems by creating fake identities and deepfakes. This helps them to trick automated verification systems. Also, AI can easily generate realistic facial images and documents that can pass several Know Your Customer (KYC) checks.

How Do Scammers Implement AI-enabled Frauds?

Here are various ways through which scammers implement AI-enabled frauds and try to fool the gullible masses:

FaaS Model: Most of the scammers use Fraud-as-a-service (FaaS) model, a special emerging and cybercrime model where advanced AI tools are sold on the dark web or telegram. Such models charge a one-time purchase fee for ready-made fraud kits, such as phishing templates, malware as well as stolen data with the help of which the non-technical users can easily execute large-scale frauds. To generate good success rates, the FaaS model heavily uses AI.

Deepfake Videos/Voice: You must have seen deepfake videos of celebrities getting popular on social media these days. With the help of AI-generated deepfake videos and audios, scammers can easily impersonate trusted figures or your family members for conducting frauds.

Automated Social Engineering: Scammers lure victims into fake investment platforms and with AI, this practice becomes even easier. Large Language Models (LLMs) can generate personalized responses that help scammers maintain professional personas across multiple social media platforms like LinkedIn, Telegram or Instagram.

Model Manipulation: Attackers often find ways to steal money from a crypto exchange. If an exchange already uses AI for protection and classifying fraudulent transactions, scammers can use techniques such as data poisoning to corrupt the data of that particular AI model. In this manner, scammers can fool the system by classifying fraudulent transactions as genuine ones.

Cases Related To Modern Crypto Fraud

The scale of modern crypto fraud is evidenced by several landmark cases:

  1. The Hong Kong Deepfake Heist: In 2024, a finance employee at a multi-national firm received a fake video call from the company’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and thinking of it to be real, the employee transferred approximately $25M post the video call. In reality, it was a rendered deepfake of the CFO and not the actual person.
  2. The Prince Group Fraud: The Cambodia-based Prince Group actively managed industrial-scale criminal-run facilities for illegal profits. In 2025, the U.S. and international authorities acted against this group as they derived $15B in illegal profits from AI-enhanced social engineering, a manipulation technique that is used to exploit human error to gain private information or access.
  3. The M3M3 Token Manipulation: Token manipulations are common in the cryptocurrency industry. In the M3M3 token manipulation, insiders allegedly used over 150 AI-managed wallets to control 95% of the new token’s supply at launch. Scammers artificially inflated the price before a “dump” that cost investors roughly $69M in the year 2025.

How Can AI Itself Help In Preventing AI-enabled Frauds?

You must have heard that AI alone can kill AI and when it comes to fraud prevention, and there is no doubt, AI can be successfully used to fight AI-enabled frauds.

Behavioral Pattern: AI can easily analyze a user’s pattern of interacting with his/her device whether it’s typing speed, mouse movement as well as the device being used. So even if a hacker manages to steal your password, he might not be able to mimic exact behavioral patterns like yours. In this manner, AI can detect this change in pattern and lock the account.

Identity Verification: Scammers use fake identities and wallet addresses to steal money. But using AI can be beneficial as it can verify documents and identities in real-time. In this manner it’s easier to detect forged or synthetic IDs as well as deepfakes before any hack happens.

Real-time Transaction Monitoring: AI models have the capability to analyze thousands of transactions per second. If a dormant wallet, an inactive cryptocurrency address, moves a large amount of money suddenly and sends the funds to a high-risk address, the AI model can immediately pause the transaction.

Smart Contract Auditing: Several crypto scams are related to launching new tokens with malicious hidden code in their smart contracts, the digital contracts stored on a blockchain. So how does AI help in such situations? AI tools can help easily audit the codes of unknown tokens and identify hidden functions that allow developers to siphon funds.

Future Of AI In Digital Finance Fraud Detection

No single AI tool can be perfect so it’s always better to use a multi-layered defence system. One can use multiple AI models to stay protected as even if a hacker bypasses one layer, another AI can catch the fraud.

But even AI can be deceptive, and you might lose money by depending solely on one AI model for protection. It’s always better to use human intelligence along with AI, as AI can help humans to work more efficiently and smartly.

Therefore, rather than solely depending on AI models, High-risk cases that are flagged by AI can be sent to human investigators to ensure that AI is used only to assist human expertise.
