  • Coinbase faced criticism after its AI-generated “Trends” feature falsely reported a Brazil vs Norway FIFA World Cup result before the match began.
  • The fake alert claimed Norway defeated Brazil 3-2, with Erling Haaland scoring twice, despite the game not having started.
  • Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong acknowledged the issue and said the company is investigating the AI-generated error.

Hours before the World Cup match actually began, Coinbase’s prediction-markets app sent out an AI-written “breaking news” message announcing Norway’s victory against Brazil.

The alert claimed that Norway had defeated Brazil 3-2 in a FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match, with Norwegian striker Erling Haaland scoring twice to send his team into the quarterfinals.

The AI-generated report appeared genuine. The alert was published through Coinbase, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, which recently expanded into prediction markets under the leadership of CEO Brian Armstrong. However, the report was entirely false, as the match had not yet begun.

The report appeared to be compelling. It had a full match summary, a “Why it matters” section, and was displayed alongside Coinbase’s legitimate prediction markets for the same fixture. The news title was completely made up, but the prediction contracts were genuine.

Brian Armstrong Responds

After Jay, the creator of Relay Digital, brought attention to the fraudulent message, the event swiftly gained traction on social media. He scolded Coinbase for enabling AI to generate sports news without sufficient fact-checking, suggesting that millions of customers could have been deceived by false data.

Shortly after the problem came to light, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong addressed the criticism. He acknowledged the report and stated that the company’s team was investigating the issue. The statement implies that Coinbase may implement stronger protections, such as confirming sports outcomes before posting AI-generated news notifications.

Coinbase AI Hallucination

Coinbase’s AI-powered “Trends” tool, which generates automatic summaries in addition to prediction markets, was the source of the problem. The system was able to produce a realistic match report, but it was unable to discern between an actual event and a prediction. This kind of error, also referred to as an AI hallucination, happens when a large language model confidently generates inaccurate data.

The timing of the error has sparked worries because Coinbase’s prediction markets handle real money. When trading event-based contracts, users depend on fast and accurate information. False breaking news alerts have the potential to alter trade decisions and market mood.

The event also runs counter to Armstrong’s previous remarks endorsing prediction markets as a trustworthy means of learning the truth. He made the case earlier this year that markets supported by financial incentives frequently generate more accurate information than traditional media. Critics have questioned whether automated content should be so prevalent in financial goods in light of the most recent AI blunder.
