US President Donald Trump has signed two executive orders to boost America’s role in quantum computing and to prepare for future cybersecurity threats posed by advanced quantum machines. The orders aim to accelerate quantum technology development, support commercialization, and upgrade cryptographic systems to defend against potential quantum attacks.

The administration said this initiative will create a coordinated government approach to quantum innovation and protect sensitive technologies from global rivals. The move comes as competition in quantum research heats up, particularly as China invests more in scalable quantum computing and communication networks.

One order tells federal agencies to update the National Quantum Strategy within 180 days. The new strategy should encourage stronger partnerships between government, academia, and private industry, and support the commercial use of quantum technologies.

A key part of the plan is creating the Quantum Computer for Application Development and Discovery Science (QC-ADDS). This program aims to build quantum systems capable of driving breakthroughs in scientific research and advanced computing.

The second executive order addresses cybersecurity risks posed by future quantum computers. Experts have warned that powerful quantum machines could break many of the encryption systems now used to protect financial transactions, government communications, and the internet.

To address this issue, the administration has instructed federal agencies to accelerate their transition to post-quantum cryptography. The Office of Management and Budget and the National Cyber Director will lead this effort.

“The advent of large-scale quantum computers will pose a significant threat to widely used cryptographic security systems,” the order stated.

These developments also matter for the cryptocurrency industry. Some blockchain networks, such as Ethereum and Solana, are already exploring post-quantum security solutions. The Bitcoin community, however, is still debating how to best protect older wallets and cryptographic systems from future quantum threats.

As quantum computing advances, policymakers see both innovation and cybersecurity readiness as key national priorities.
