Visa and OpenAI have teamed up to bring AI-powered payments to ChatGPT, taking a big step toward adding shopping features directly into AI platforms. This partnership comes soon after OpenAI’s confidential IPO filing. Visa will provide its payment systems, while OpenAI brings its AI technology to help make secure, user-controlled transactions. This move is part of Visa’s larger plan to let AI systems find products, compare choices, and make purchases for users.
The partnership was announced at the Visa Payments Forum in San Francisco. Visa will offer access to its payment network, digital credentials, security systems, and tools to prevent fraud.
With this deal, developers and merchants will get tools to add Visa payments into apps and services powered by OpenAI. The companies are also looking into business uses tied to AI coding tools and automating workflows.
Visa says users will be able to set their own spending limits, approval steps, and banking rules for transactions. Payments will use tokenized credentials, real-time checks, and fraud detection tools.
Visa’s Chief Product and Strategy Officer, Jack Forestell, called AI a game-changer for commerce, saying it could have an even bigger impact than the internet or mobile technology.
OpenAI leaders also believe AI-driven shopping will go far beyond regular online buying. They say AI agents will help users with purchases, payments, and more complex financial tasks.
With competition heating up, Mastercard has launched its own AI agent payment platform, showing that more companies are interested in AI-powered shopping and automated finance.
