The Ethereum Foundation has formed a special team focused on post-quantum security as concerns rise about how future quantum computers could threaten today’s cryptography. The new effort is being led by cryptography engineer Thomas Coratger and has been named a top priority by senior Ethereum researcher Justin Drake.
To support research in this area, the foundation announced a $1 million Poseidon Prize to improve a key cryptographic hash function. This adds to an earlier $1 million Proximity Prize aimed at broader cryptographic innovation.
The move comes as the wider crypto industry pays closer attention to quantum risks. Coinbase has recently set up a quantum advisory board, while Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has stressed that quantum resistance is essential for Ethereum’s long-term security.
