American Express has unveiled Amex Passport, a blockchain-based initiative offering travel stamps as ERC-721 NFTs on Ethereum layer-2 network Base. Available to U.S. Amex consumer cardholders, the stamps automatically record trips booked through Amex in the past two years. Users can customize their stamps with memories like meals, hotels, or activities, then share them digitally.
The NFTs are non-transferable and display only basic information such as country, description, and date. Amex emphasized that Base will not reveal personal travel details. Luke Gebb, EVP of Amex Digital Labs, said the initiative provides travelers with a way to relive trips as physical passport stamps decline.
An Amex survey found 73% of respondents want more ways to celebrate past travels, while 56% miss traditional stamps at border crossings. The move also highlights the growing role of blockchain in travel and commerce, complementing rising crypto adoption in tourism platforms like Travala and airlines worldwide.
