SAFU Balance Drops Sharply After Hack Deployment

What Is The SAFU Fund?
The SAFU fund was established by Binance in 2018 as an emergency insurance reserve. The exchange historically allocates 10% of trading fees to the fund. It was most notably used during Binance’s 2019 hack, when approximately $40 million in Bitcoin was stolen.

Binance has not publicly stated when or how it plans to restore the SAFU balance. With no clear roadmap provided, industry analysts note the fund’s capacity to handle another significant security event has been significantly reduced in the near term.
Broader Implications For Exchange Insurance Models
The incident has raised questions in the crypto industry about whether self-insurance is enough for an exchange of this scale and some have said that reserves should be mandated by regulators or an insurance company should be brought in like they are in traditional finance.
