The United States turned into a net importer of Bitcoin in 2026 for the first time since 2022, according to a study by blockchain research firm Chainalysis. The report covered the year ending in June of 2026 and attributed the reversal to large transactions. Those worth more than $10 million brought a net inflow of 53,200 BTC, worth around $4.3 billion were the main contributors to a shift in the trend.

However, smaller ones valued at under $10,000 indicated that more of the cryptocurrency was flowing out than flowing in. This implies that big investors were buying it into the country while smaller ones sold some of their shares.
Chainalysis evaluates cryptocurrency transactions to determine where Bitcoin is being “imported” and “exported.” Since it is a digital asset, the transfers of the currency do not involve physical movement. The company analyses transaction and exchange data to approximate volumes.
The report did not name the organizations that were responsible for importing Bitcoin into the U.S. Or where the smaller amount of the digital currency moved by the ordinary investors went. The figures do not mean that all the organizations that were based in America had purchased the cryptocurrency. International transfers, exchange activity as well as payments could affect the values as well.
The introduction of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States in January 2024 facilitated the purchase of Bitcoin by conventional investors. Following the launch, U.S.-based investors’ involvement in international bitcoin transactions increased every quarter, according to Chainalysis.
However, ETFs were not the main reason behind the inflows of the cryptocurrency in 2026. In the first half of that year, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded more outbound than inbound funds with a net outflow of approximately $5.39 billion. The situation started improving in the subsequent months.
This implies that other factors may have contributed to the increase in the amount of Bitcoin in the U.S. However, the report did not identify them.
The report also evaluated stablecoins. They are cryptocurrencies whose value is usually pegged to another asset, mostly the U.S. dollar. People use them to make international payments, store value and conduct business in countries where banking services are not easily available.
The U.S. Became a Net Importer of Bitcoin for the First Time in 2026, Marking the First Such Shift Since 2022
According to a Chainalysis report, the U.S. became a net importer of Bitcoin in 2026 for the first time since 2022, with institutions continuing to buy Bitcoin while retail investors were net sellers. Since the launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs in 2024, the U.S. share of global Bitcoin activity has increased in every reporting period. Meanwhile, the U.S. crypto economy totaled $2.78 trillion, down 2.2% quarter over quarter, while dollar-backed stablecoins continued to expand in overseas payments and cross-border commerce, generating billions of dollars in economic activity for U.S. companies and the government.

According to the report, 99.1 percent of stablecoins that were traded on order books were pegged to the U.S. dollar. Just 0.45 percent were linked to the euro. This implies the extent to which the dollar dominates the stablecoin market.
The U.S. continued to be the largest crypto market among the ones identified by the study. Its crypto economy was valued at $2.78 trillion as of the period despite being 2.2 percent lower than the previous quarter.
Chainalysis also estimated that tokenized real-world assets were worth $36.07 billion in the second quarter of 2026. These included $15.42 billion in tokenized U.S. Treasury debt. Tokenization works by creating digital tokens on the blockchain to represent assets such as government securities.
Overall, the report indicates that large investors are playing a significant role in the U.S. Bitcoin market. Transactions, ETFs, stablecoins and tokenized assets will continue to define the country’s crypto space.
