Solana is preparing to activate its Alpenglow upgrade on October 21, 2026, at around 14:50 UTC. The upgrade aims to reduce transaction finality from about 12.8 seconds to just 150 milliseconds, or 0.15 seconds. According to core developer Anza, the upgrade will replace the network’s existing TowerBFT system with a new system called Votor. The change is expected to help Solana process transactions more efficiently and make its network faster for users and businesses.

The upgrade has been in development for around 18 months. In September, Solana’s community approved the proposal, known as SIMD-0326, with 98.27% voting in favour. About 1.05% voted against it, while 0.69% abstained. The proposal received participation from 52% of the network’s stake and crossed the required approval threshold.

Alpenglow has already been tested on Solana’s testnet and devnet. These networks allow developers to test new features before introducing them on the main network, where real transactions take place.

One of the main changes involves how validators help the network agree on new blocks. Validators are participants who process transactions and help maintain the blockchain. Under the existing system, their votes are recorded as on-chain transactions. With Alpenglow, validators will exchange votes directly, reducing the extra work involved in reaching agreement.

This change could also leave more space for regular user transactions. However, some tracking services may report lower transaction numbers because validator votes will no longer be counted as on-chain transactions. This would not necessarily mean that user activity has fallen.

The upgrade is also designed to keep Solana running even if up to 40% of its stake goes offline. Another component, called Rotor, is expected to reduce data transfers between validators but will be introduced later.

Solana infrastructure provider Jito has issued instructions to help validators prepare for the upgrade. Validators need to check their software and system settings to avoid problems during the transition.

Although the 150-millisecond target could make Solana more attractive for trading and payment applications, the actual performance will become clear only after the upgrade goes live.
