Hanwha Investment & Securities has reportedly completed a tokenized securities platform supporting Avalanche, as South Korea prepares to bring blockchain-based securities into its regulated financial markets from February 4, 2027. The platform, developed with blockchain technology company FairSquare Lab, can operate across Avalanche and enterprise Ethereum blockchain Hyperledger Besu. The move comes as South Korea prepares new rules that will legally recognise tokenized securities within its existing capital markets framework.

Hanwha began developing the platform in 2025, according to Seoul Economic Daily. The system was designed to work with more than one distributed ledger rather than locking the brokerage into a single blockchain.

Avalanche is one of the networks supported by the platform. Hyperledger Besu, an Ethereum-compatible enterprise blockchain, is also included. This gives Hanwha flexibility as financial institutions prepare for the country’s new tokenized securities system.

The Korea Securities Depository is taking a similar multi-network approach. Its planned infrastructure is designed to connect with Avalanche, Hyperledger Besu and Hyperledger Fabric. Participation in these networks will be restricted to approved financial institutions and relevant securities infrastructure providers.

The choice of Avalanche appears to reflect demand from financial companies. A KSD official told Seoul Economic Daily that several companies had requested support for Avalanche through industry consultations and existing projects.

The development comes as South Korea moves closer to formally bringing security tokens into its financial system. The Financial Services Commission announced a three-stage roadmap on September 4 for developing infrastructure for tokenized securities. The changes to the Electronic Registration Act are scheduled to take effect on February 4, 2027.

The first stage is expected to cover selected securities, including certain privately pooled money market funds, institutional bonds, unlisted shares issued through trust structures and publicly offered fractional investment securities.

The second stage would expand tokenization to all publicly offered securities, although regulators have not fixed a date for that expansion. The timing will depend partly on how the first phase performs and how quickly financial institutions adopt the required technology.

A later stage could bring blockchain-based payment infrastructure into the system. The FSC has discussed the possibility of using stablecoins for the payment side of tokenized securities transactions, although the timing will depend on South Korea’s wider stablecoin legislation.

South Korea’s approach is notable because tokenized securities will remain securities under existing financial laws. They are not being created as a completely separate asset class simply because they are recorded on a blockchain.

Financial firms will also have to pass technical and operational checks before connecting their distributed ledgers to the Korea Securities Depository. These reviews will include issuance, circulation, rights management and contingency arrangements for technical problems.

Hanwha has been building a broader position in the blockchain and tokenization sector. The group has invested in Securitize, a company that provides tokenized-asset infrastructure to major financial institutions.

Hanwha Investment & Securities has also invested in other blockchain companies, including Xangle and Kresus, and has expanded its exposure to South Korea’s digital-asset sector through its investment in Dunamu, the operator of Upbit.

The latest Avalanche platform therefore fits into a wider strategy rather than being an isolated blockchain experiment. South Korea is creating a regulated framework for tokenized securities, while major financial companies are preparing the technology needed to operate within it.

For Avalanche, Hanwha’s project is another sign that institutional blockchain use is moving beyond experiments and into regulated financial infrastructure. The real test will come when South Korea’s new rules take effect next year and tokenized securities begin operating at scale.
