Pi Network is targeting September 15, 2026, for the Mainnet upgrade to Protocol 27, a major step that will introduce more flexible smart-contract authentication and support new applications and decentralized trading. The upgrade is also expected to bring automated market maker (AMM) liquidity pools and RPC infrastructure to the network.
With Protocol 27 described by Pi as the final planned upgrade in its current development sequence, the September 15 rollout will be an important test of whether Pi can turn its large user community into meaningful activity on the blockchain.
The upgrade follows the successful completion of Protocol 26 on Pi Mainnet. Protocol 27 began rolling out on Testnet 1 in August, giving developers and users time to test the new features before the planned Mainnet activation.
Pi Network sets September 15 target for its Protocol 27 mainnet upgrade
Pi Network (@PiCoreTeam) began upgrading its testnet to Protocol 27 on Friday, following the completed Protocol 26 upgrade on mainnet. The new version centers on smart contract authentication.

One of the key changes is smart-contract authentication. Pi says the new capabilities will give accounts and applications more flexible and secure ways to authorise transactions. This could make it easier for developers to build applications that require more advanced authentication.
RPC infrastructure is another important part of the development. An RPC server acts as a bridge between applications and the blockchain, allowing developers to communicate with the network without having to run a complete blockchain node themselves. Pi had already released RPC infrastructure on Testnet earlier this year as part of its wider smart-contract development.
Protocol 27 is also expected to support AMM liquidity pools and Pi’s decentralized exchange. The DEX has already been tested through Pi Launchpad. One test involving the SLICE token attracted around 242,000 Pioneers, who committed 15.92 million Test-Pi. The tokens had no monetary value, so the real test will come when users can participate with assets that have market value.
The timing is significant for Pi. The network has spent years building a large community and developing an ecosystem around its mobile mining model. Pi’s Open Network launched in February 2025, allowing the blockchain to connect with the wider crypto ecosystem.
The project has also been expanding its developer tools. On September 4, Pi announced local storage support for selected Pi Browser applications, access to app-specific staking data and native file and video sharing. It also released a new documentation hub bringing together resources for registration, sandbox testing, authentication, payments and Mainnet launches.
These developments point to a clear shift in focus. Pi is no longer simply trying to build a large user base; it is trying to give developers more reasons to build useful applications around that community.
The market, however, remains cautious. Recent reports have placed PI around the $0.09–$0.10 range, with $0.10 emerging as an important level for traders. A successful Protocol 27 launch could improve sentiment, but the longer-term question will be whether the new infrastructure generates sustained transactions, liquidity and applications.
That is why September 15 matters. Delivering the upgrade on schedule would mark an important technical milestone. But the bigger test will begin after the upgrade: whether Pi’s millions of users actually use the new products and services being built on the network.
