Coinbase has become the first major regulated exchange to offer crypto perpetuals in Canada, giving eligible investors access to regulated derivatives trading. Through Coinbase Financial Markets (CFM), eligible Canadian traders can now trade 23 perpetual and dated crypto futures, with leverage of up to 10x.

The launch expands Coinbase’s international derivatives business and gives sophisticated Canadian investors new ways to hedge positions or trade on both rising and falling crypto prices.

The contracts cover Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and 20 other digital assets. Coinbase is offering the products to eligible sophisticated and institutional investors under an international exemption within Canadian securities rules.

CFM is registered with the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission as a futures commission merchant. The Canadian rollout allows Coinbase to bring its derivatives infrastructure to a market where regulated access to crypto futures has so far been relatively limited.

The exchange is also offering nano-sized contracts, which require less upfront capital and may make derivatives trading more accessible to eligible investors. Traders can take either long or short positions and use leverage of up to 10x. For a limited period, introductory pricing starts at 0.02% per trade, plus $0.11 per contract.

The new offering goes beyond cryptocurrencies. Coinbase’s Canadian derivatives platform also includes five commodity futures linked to gold, silver and oil. Index products such as COIN50 are available as well, giving users access to a wider selection of markets.

Derivatives can be useful for investors who want to manage price risks without directly buying or selling the underlying asset. The Bank of Canada has reported that roughly one-third of publicly listed Canadian non-financial companies use derivatives to hedge risks to their earnings.

Crypto derivatives have also become a major part of global digital-asset trading. Coinbase estimates that worldwide crypto derivatives trading volume is about 4.4 times the size of spot trading. The Canadian launch therefore gives eligible local investors access to a market that is already a significant part of global crypto activity.

The move fits into Coinbase’s broader “everything exchange” strategy, which seeks to bring crypto and traditional financial products together on one platform. Coinbase Canada has operated as a restricted dealer since April 2024 and is also pursuing Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) dealer status.

Coinbase is expanding its financial infrastructure in other ways, too. Webull Canada has selected Coinbase’s Crypto-as-a-Service platform to provide crypto trading and custody services through its investment platform.

The company is also widening its international product range outside Canada. Coinbase has begun rolling out U.S. stock trading to eligible customers in the UK, adding equities to its growing list of financial products.

The Canadian derivatives launch is another step in that wider expansion. By combining crypto futures, commodities, indexes and other financial products, Coinbase is seeking to position itself as more than a traditional crypto exchange and build a broader global trading platform.
