  • The Zswap infrastructure of Midnight Network is incorporating Celestia’s data availability layer.
  • Zswap users can find swap offers without using a different P2P messaging network thanks to the integration.
  • Zswap offers can be made available to wallets and apps via a shared Celestia namespace.

Midnight Network is expanding its Zswap infrastructure by integrating Celestia’s data availability network to help users and applications discover swap offers across the ecosystem.

Midnight, a privacy-focused blockchain backed by Cardano’s Input Output Global (IOG), is using Celestia to distribute Zswap offers through a shared data space. The move replaces the need for a separate peer-to-peer (P2P) messaging system for offer discovery.

Under the new setup, Zswap offers can be posted to a dedicated Celestia namespace. Wallets, marketplaces, and other applications can monitor the same space to find available offers. This gives different platforms access to a shared pool of offers without having to build and maintain separate P2P networks.

Celestia Supports Zswap Offer Discovery

Zswap allows users to create private offers to exchange one asset for another. However, users still need a way to discover offers from potential counterparties.

Instead of sending these offers through a dedicated gossip network, Midnight can publish them to Celestia. Once the data is available, other participants can retrieve the offer and create a matching transaction.

The approach separates offer discovery from settlement. Celestia provides the data availability layer, while the completed swap is settled on Midnight’s layer-1 network.

According to Celestia’s case study, the system also provides cryptographic commitments and availability guarantees. This helps participants verify that published data can be accessed across the network.

Shared Offers Could Improve Liquidity

A shared offer pool could make it easier for new wallets and applications to connect with existing Zswap activity. Instead of creating their own offer pools, applications can access the same data published through the Celestia namespace.

Celestia said its Fibre upgrade can support throughput of up to 1 terabit per second. The higher capacity is designed to make data availability useful for workloads that previously depended on traditional P2P networks.

For Midnight, the integration can reduce the need to build, maintain, and troubleshoot a separate gossip system for Zswap offers. The partnership was detailed in a Celestia case study published in June and highlighted again in an Aug. 24 post on X. Charles Hoskinson, co-founder of IOHK and Cardano, also welcomed the partnership, saying, “It’s great working with Celestia. Great team, great ecosystem, great tech.”

The Midnight-Celestia integration shows how data availability technology can support blockchain applications beyond basic scaling, while helping create a simpler way for users and applications to discover Zswap offers.
