BitMart Weighs Partial Restart & Creditor Payouts Weeks After Shutdown

Crypto exchange BitMart is considering a partial restart of its operations while also looking at payouts to creditors, less than four weeks after announcing that it would shut down. The exchange said a possible restructuring plan could involve the phased resumption of some operations alongside distributions to creditors. BitMart has appointed law firm White & Case as its restructuring counsel and expects to present a roadmap by September 9.

The development marks a significant change in the way BitMart has described its situation. In its July 26 closure announcement, the exchange cited operating conditions, the market environment and its future strategy as reasons for the decision. It did not mention creditors or a restructuring process at the time.

Now, the possibility of creditor distributions suggests that the exchange is dealing with a broader financial or operational restructuring than its earlier announcement indicated. BitMart has not said how much creditors could receive or what conditions would apply to any payments.

The exchange has already taken several steps towards winding down its platform. It stopped accepting new registrations and deposits and halted new trading orders. Futures accounts were also moved into reduce-only mode, meaning users could reduce existing positions but could not open new ones.

BitMart had set August 26 as the deadline for ending all trading activity. It had also planned to terminate its wider platform operations on January 31, 2027. Withdrawals were expected to remain available during the wind-down period, although users would face additional compliance checks.

The latest announcement leaves the future of BitMart less certain than it appeared a few weeks ago. Instead of a straightforward shutdown, the exchange is now considering whether some services can return in a controlled manner while creditors are paid.

The roadmap expected by September 9 could provide more clarity on whether BitMart can restart selected operations and how its restructuring would affect users and creditors.
