Strategy has returned to unrealized profit on its enormous Bitcoin holdings after a sharp five-day rally pushed Bitcoin above the company’s average acquisition price. The turnaround marks a significant shift for the Michael Saylor-led Bitcoin treasury company, which had been facing substantial paper losses during the market downturn.
Based on current market prices, Strategy’s holdings of 840,447 BTC are estimated to be worth $64.97 billion. The company is thought to be sitting on an unrealized gain of about $1.4 billion, or 2.4% of the value of its holdings, with Bitcoin currently trading at about $77,000.
The latest recovery is particularly notable because Strategy’s Bitcoin position had been deeply underwater in July. When Bitcoin declined toward approximately $58,000, the company’s holdings were estimated to be around $13 billion below their acquisition value.
The sharp improvement demonstrates how quickly the profitability of Strategy’s Bitcoin treasury can change because of the company’s enormous exposure to the asset. Bitcoin’s recent rally has therefore had a substantial impact on the value of Strategy’s holdings.
The company, formerly known as MicroStrategy, has built its corporate strategy around accumulating Bitcoin and treating the cryptocurrency as a primary treasury reserve asset. Strategy has maintained one of the biggest publicly traded Bitcoin holdings in the world under Saylor’s direction.
Bitcoin is still much below its October all-time high of about $126,000 despite the recent rebound. This indicates that there is still a long way to go before the market reaches its prior record highs.
For Strategy, however, the move above its average acquisition price represents an important milestone. Investors will now be watching Bitcoin’s ability to maintain its gains, as further upside could substantially increase the company’s unrealized profits while another market correction could quickly reverse them.
As of today, Saylor is back in profit.
