Cardano has outlined a staggered timeline for its next significant network update, the Dijkstra hard fork period. The development is expected to be finished by the fourth quarter of 2026, while Ouroboros Peras finality is scheduled for the second quarter of 2027. It is anticipated that the first phase would upgrade Cardano to version 12 and have the network ready for the next phase.

The second phase would introduce Peras, a consensus enhancement designed to speed up transaction finality. However, both stages remain subject to Cardano’s on-chain governance process and are not guaranteed launch dates.

Named after computer scientist Edsger Dijkstra, the Dijkstra era follows Cardano’s research-driven approach to major protocol changes. Rather than attempting to introduce all the changes at once, the project has divided the upgrade into two main stages.

The first stage will focus on completing the underlying development work and preparing the network for a potential mainnet upgrade. Cardano is targeting the end of 2026 for the required code to be completed.

A key part of this stage will be the move to protocol version 12. It is anticipated that the new version will include modifications that will lay the technological groundwork for the subsequent stage of the Dijkstra upgrade.

But finishing the code in Q4 2026 does not guaranty that the update will launch at that time. Whether and when the improvements are implemented on the mainnet will be determined in large part by Cardano’s governance mechanism. Currently, Q2 2027 is the aim for the second stage. This phase would introduce Ouroboros Peras through an internal hard fork.

Peras is designed to improve the finality of transactions on Cardano’s Ouroboros consensus system. In simple terms, faster finality means users and applications can gain stronger confidence that a transaction has been confirmed without having to wait as long.

That could be particularly useful for decentralised finance applications, payments and other services where transaction speed and settlement certainty matter.

The planned second phase will build on the technical work completed during the first stage. This means developers will have to prepare for the changes introduced by protocol version 12 before Peras can be brought into the network.

The roadmap gives Cardano developers a clearer view of what is coming. Having a longer preparation period should allow projects to test their applications and address compatibility issues before any major network transition.

For developers working on DeFi and other applications, improvements in finality could make Cardano more attractive for activities where confirmation times directly affect the user experience.

At the same time, Cardano is stressing that the dates in the roadmap should be viewed as development targets rather than fixed deployment dates. The network’s on-chain governance process can influence the timing if additional testing, technical work or community discussion becomes necessary.
