Billionaire investor Mark Cuban is bullish on the prospects of artificial intelligence chips as the next big investment story, saying that demand is poised to rival the rise of cryptocurrency.

Mr. Cuban recently declared that “chips as an asset class will be the new crypto,” as companies around the world continue to invest in artificial intelligence, data-center hardware and computer infrastructure.

Modern artificial intelligence is capital-intensive, and graphics processing units, or GPUs, are at the forefront of this boom. Nvidia, a company that designs and sells specialized computers, had its stocks surge as investors anticipate the demand for its cutting-edge chips to propel the sale of data-center hardware.

Demand for computer infrastructure is also surging, as cloud-based AI needs access to tens of thousands of these powerful processors.

Cuban’s comparison with crypto suggests that he sees AI chips becoming more than just components used by technology companies. Instead, he believes the hardware itself could become an important investment theme.

The comparison is notable because cryptocurrency evolved from a niche technology into a distinct asset class that attracted retail investors, institutions and financial companies. AI hardware is following a different path, but demand for computing capacity is creating a similarly powerful investment narrative.

However, the two markets are fundamentally different. AI chips are tangible resources related to supply chains, technology advancement, and semiconductor production. The demand from businesses developing AI systems and the rate at which new chip generations are released have a significant impact on their worth.

Cuban’s comments nevertheless highlight a broader shift in the AI investment story. The infrastructure required to enable AI applications and chatbots is becoming increasingly crucial. As AI models get more sophisticated and autonomous, the demand for advanced computing might keep rising. As a result, semiconductors, GPUs, and data center infrastructure may become more significant investment themes in the worldwide technology industry.
