Harvard Management Company kept its $101 million stake in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust, or IBIT, throughout the second quarter, according to its most recent regulatory filing. As of June 30, the university’s investment division had 3,044,612 IBIT shares, which is the same amount it reported at the end of the first quarter.

The decision comes after Harvard significantly reduced its Bitcoin ETF exposure over the previous two quarters. The institution cut its IBIT holdings by around 21% during Q4 and another 43% during Q1. The latest filing therefore represents a pause in those reductions, with Harvard keeping its existing share count unchanged.

Although the number of shares remained stable, the reported value of the investment declined from approximately $117M to $101M. The change was mainly linked to the lower quarter-end price of IBIT rather than a fresh sale of shares.

Harvard’s portfolio also includes exposure to gold ETFs, with its reported gold ETF holdings worth roughly $171M. The combination indicates that the institution continues to maintain exposure to alternative assets alongside its traditional investments.

The Harvard Bitcoin ETF investment fits in with the trend of institutional investors to gain exposure to crypto assets via regulated products, says Bloomberg. By Bitcoin spot ETF, institutional investors can participate in the price gains of the cryptocurrency without worrying about custody of digital assets and private keys. Harvard is one of the most monitored institutional investors in the world, which makes the development noteworthy.  Its decision to maintain the position could indicate that the university remains comfortable with having Bitcoin exposure despite previous reductions.

Other major institutional investors have also reported significant holdings in U.S. Bitcoin ETFs. The growing presence of universities, asset managers, banks and sovereign-linked funds has helped make spot Bitcoin ETFs an increasingly important part of the traditional investment landscape.

For Bitcoin markets, institutional ETF holdings are closely watched because sustained allocations can contribute to broader acceptance of the asset as an investable portfolio component.
