  • To increase funds for their Bitcoin treasury strategy, Metaplanet introduces BitBonds. Through four private bond series, the company sold its first BitBonds for $1.3 million.
  • The bonds mature in around three years and have an annual interest rate of 4% to 4.3%. Investors are not directly exposed to Bitcoin using BitBonds.
  • Because the bonds are unrated and unsecured, investor returns are reliant on Metaplanet’s creditworthiness. Metaplanet reports that following a 5,014 BTC wallet transfer, its Bitcoin holdings are still at 43,000 BTC.

Japanese Bitcoin treasury company Metaplanet has launched a new bond program called BitBonds as it expands the ways it can raise money for its Bitcoin strategy.

The company had its sale of BitBonds and was done through four bond series. These bonds are worth about 200 million yen. That is $1.3 million.

The BitBonds are special because they are not secured with anything. They will be paid back in three years. The people who buy these BitBonds will get interest every year. This interest will be between 4% and 4.3%.

The company only sold the BitBonds to an investors & also done under the placement rules, in Japan. The company told people about this sale on August 13.

Metaplanet said BitBonds will become one of its main funding options alongside common shares, equity-linked securities, and preferred shares.

Investors Do Not Own Bitcoin

BitBonds do not let investors make money directly from the Bitcoin price going up or down. What investors get is a fixed amount of interest and their money back. Only if Metaplanet can pay its debts.

The BitBonds are not very safe for investors because they are not secured with anything. This means investors are not protected like people who lend money in a way. Investors might not be able to sell the BitBonds before they mature either.

Metaplanet says this program helps them use some of the value of their Bitcoin to get funding, with a fixed interest rate. Future bond sales will depend on the company’s funding needs, market conditions, and investor demand.

The company also plans to build the program further and could consider larger public bond offerings in the future.

Metaplanet Says No Bitcoin Was Sold

The BitBonds launch happened on the day that Metaplanet talked about a big Bitcoin transfer. This transfer had raised a lot of questions among people who invest in Bitcoin. Metaplanet moved a lot of Bitcoin. 5,014 Bitcoin, to be exact. Between its wallets. At the time, this Bitcoin was worth about $322 million.

CEO Simon Gerovich said that this transfer was a normal move of Bitcoin from one place to another and that Metaplanet did not sell any Bitcoin

Metaplanet said that it still has 43,000 Bitcoin. The company makes its wallet addresses public so people can see the transaction on the blockchain.

The transfer of Bitcoin cost Metaplanet $8 in fees to use the network.

More Funding Options For Bitcoin Treasuries

Metaplanet’s BitBonds program shows how public companies are using different ways to finance Bitcoin holdings. Some companies continue to buy more Bitcoin, while others sell part of their holdings to support business operations. Metaplanet is taking another approach by using debt to raise funds while keeping its Bitcoin treasury.
