Coinbase is upgrading its derivatives infrastructure with a new high-performance matching engine on Deribit, aiming to improve execution speed and scalability for institutional traders as its global derivatives business expands.

In addition to moving Deribit onto the same core execution infrastructure as Coinbase International Exchange, the new engine can execute over 100,000 orders per second with sub-millisecond matching latency, according to the official statement. According to Coinbase, the update is intended to provide better liquidity and quicker execution as trade volume increases.

In order to accommodate growing international business, Coinbase improves its derivatives infrastructure with a new matching engine that processes more than 100,000 orders per second.

According to Coinbase, the specialized infrastructure is built to manage the institutional derivatives markets’ large volumes and low latency needs. According to the statement, the engine adds an integrated speed boost on specific instruments in addition to the quicker matching capabilities. When the market is moving quickly, the feature gives liquidity providers additional time to modify their prices by momentarily delaying aggressive orders.

Over time, Coinbase anticipates that the technique would push market makers to hold bigger resting orders and quote narrower spreads, which might improve institutional traders’ liquidity.

Luuk Strijers, senior director and head of international derivatives at Coinbase, stated in the announcement that “derivatives markets demand speed, reliability, and the capacity to perform at scale.”

The launch is a component of Coinbase’s larger initiative to move its derivatives activities onto a common platform. Coinbase intends to transfer all of its perpetual futures onto the engine later this year, and Deribit has joined Coinbase International Exchange on the new execution system.

The upgrade is meant to enable more products as Coinbase expands its global derivatives offering and would provide options and perpetual futures with a more reliable technology base.

The infrastructure drive coincides with Coinbase’s efforts to increase derivatives access in a number of markets. This week, the UK exchange announced that qualified professional investors will gradually have access to over 170 perpetual contracts, dated futures, and cryptocurrency options with up to 50x leverage.

Additionally, Coinbase has been trying to increase regulated access to international cryptocurrency futures in the US. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) authorized Coinbase Financial Markets to function as a futures commission merchant in May, giving U.S. institutions access to international cryptocurrency perpetual futures and options via the regulated marketplace.

Perpetual futures and other contract and collateral kinds were anticipated to follow, according to the business, which also stated that institutional onboarding for Deribit options had already started.

At the same time, Coinbase has increased the variety of derivatives that foreign traders may purchase, such as gold and silver perpetual contracts that were introduced in May for qualified non-US customers.

The new matching engine adds another layer to that expansion, focusing less on individual products and more on the underlying infrastructure needed to support Coinbase’s growing derivatives business.
