  • Muse Glimmer, an open-weight AI model with 30 billion parameters that may operate locally, has been released by Meta. The weights for Meta’s most recent frontier model, Muse Spark 1.2, will soon be available.
  • The United States should dominate the open-weight AI sector, according to Mark Zuckerberg.
  • Competition is growing thanks to Chinese AI models like DeepSeek, Moonshot, and Alibaba. Open-weight AI, according to Meta, can boost innovation, competitiveness, and access.

Meta has announced the release of its new Muse Glimmer AI model as an open-weight model, allowing users to download the model weights and run it on their own systems. The company also plans to release the weights for Muse Spark 1.2, which Meta describes as its latest and most powerful frontier model.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the Muse Glimmer release in a post on X, describing it as a 30-billion-parameter model that can run locally. He also confirmed plans to make Muse Spark 1.2 available with its weights.

“Meta is a strong supporter of open source, and I’m proud of these releases,” Zuckerberg said.

The move comes as competition in the open-weight AI market continues to grow, particularly from Chinese companies. Models from DeepSeek, Moonshot, and Alibaba have gained attention for offering strong performance at lower costs compared with some leading models from U.S. companies.

The growing popularity of Chinese models has also raised concerns in Washington about how the U.S. should respond. Meta, Nvidia and other technology companies have previously urged the U.S. government not to introduce restrictions that could slow the development and use of open-weight AI models.

Zuckerberg Calls For Stronger U.S. Open-weight AI Strategy

In an essay titled “The Future is for Everyone,” Zuckerberg argued that the U.S. and its allies need to take the lead in the open-weight AI ecosystem. He said open models are expected to account for a significant share of AI use globally.

Zuckerberg also pointed to challenges faced by U.S. companies, including additional restrictions related to training data. He contended that minimizing superfluous obstacles could enable American firms to compete more efficiently with international AI creators.

The Meta CEO dismissed the notion that limiting access to foreign open-weight models would be the most effective method to ensure U.S. dominance. Rather, he stated that emphasis should be placed on creating more robust American models capable of competing on the global stage.

Zuckerberg further warned that policies slowing the release of new U.S. frontier models could hurt the country’s position in the AI market. He called for closer cooperation between technology companies and the government rather than a lengthy approval process for every new model.
