  • The pilot used tokenized central bank reserves and commercial bank deposits to settle payments across six major currencies, achieving an average settlement time of 80 seconds.
  • By using a shared distributed ledger, Project Agorá reduced reconciliation needs, improved transaction transparency, and streamlined cross-border payment processing.
  • The initiative enabled simultaneous FX settlements, lowering counterparty risk by ensuring both sides of a currency exchange are completed at the same time.

Another indication that tokenization is permeating the global financial system is the fact that several of the largest banks in the world have successfully conducted actual cross-border transactions using tokenized money in a test run by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS).

Approximately $1 million (CHF 800,000) in real-value transactions in six currencies, the US dollar, euro, British pound, Japanese yen, Swiss franc, and South Korean won, were handled by Project Agorá, which unites five central banks and 28 commercial lenders, including JPMorgan, Citi, UBS, Deutsche Bank, and Standard Chartered.

Tokenized Money Improves Cross-border Settlement Efficiency

Project Agorá investigated the possibility of streamlining international payments with tokenized commercial bank deposits and central bank reserves. The pilot allowed participating institutions to access a single source of truth for payment and ownership records by placing tokenized money on a common blockchain-based ledger rather than depending on conventional correspondent banking networks.

Despite the prototype’s lack of direct connection to current financial payment systems, transactions were settled in an average of 80 seconds, according to the BIS. According to the findings, tokenization can greatly increase payment speed while lowering operational complexity and reconciliation requirements.

Shared Ledger Reduces Risk In Foreign Exchange Transactions

The project also tested foreign exchange (FX) settlements, allowing two currencies to be exchanged simultaneously. This approach minimizes settlement risk by ensuring that both sides of a transaction are completed at the same time, reducing the possibility of one party sending funds without receiving the corresponding currency.

Participating banks indicated enhanced transparency, along with better payment tracking during the transaction process. Crucially, the platform was intended to enhance the existing banking framework instead of replacing it, facilitating a more feasible integration with current financial systems.

Tokenization Gains Momentum Across Global Finance

The effective BIS pilot signifies a larger movement towards embracing tokenized financial assets and digital currencies. Asset managers are progressively introducing tokenized money market funds and private credit offerings, as stablecoins increasingly gain popularity for corporate treasury management and cross-border transactions.

In contrast to privately issued stablecoins, Project Agorá aims to tokenize conventional types of bank money, such as central bank reserves and deposits from commercial banks.
