Crypto exchange Coinbase and Bitcoin treasury company Strategy have reported second-quarter results that have fallen short of Wall Street expectations. Prices of both the stocks declined announcements of the earnings.

Although both firms reported significant losses, management claimed that accounting modifications had a greater impact on the headline numbers than any weakening in the underlying company.

Coinbase’s revenue for the quarter was $1.22 billion, less than the $1.28 billion analysts had predicted, and its profits per share were -$1.36, less than the -$0.42 forecast. For the third straight quarter, the firm posted a GAAP net loss of $359 million. However, restructuring expenses, stock-based compensation, and a $209.5 million non-cash markdown on cryptocurrency assets retained on its balance sheet accounted for a large portion of the loss. Barring these items, Coinbase remained operationally profitable and posted adjusted EBITDA of $208 million in its 14th consecutive positive quarter.

Even as overall crypto trading activity slowed, Coinbase expanded its position in the market. The company increased its global crypto trading market share to a record 10.3%, up from 9.1% in the previous quarter, marking its third consecutive quarter of market share gains.

It also continued diversifying its business beyond spot Bitcoin trading. Prediction markets revenue surged 106% quarter-over-quarter, exceeding a $100 million annualised run rate, while average USDC balances on Coinbase products reached a record $20 billion.

The company said 88% of its net revenue now comes from businesses other than spot Bitcoin trading, reflecting its broader “Everything Exchange” strategy.

Strategy also missed expectations, reporting $122 million in revenue against estimates of $124.48 million. Due to a $8.32 billion unrealized fair-value markdown on its Bitcoin assets after the cryptocurrency’s price dropped during the quarter, the business reported a net loss of almost $8.2 billion.

The earnings per share were much lower than the anticipated $3.07 at -$24.45. Despite the loss, Strategy continued strengthening its balance sheet and Bitcoin-focused business.

The company held 843,775 BTC as of July 26, raised $17.06 billion through at-the-market stock offerings this year, and built a $3.75 billion U.S. dollar reserve, which is enough to cover more than two years of preferred dividend payments and interest obligations.

It also sold around $218.4 million worth of Bitcoin under its new BTC Monetization Program to improve liquidity and announced a $1 billion share repurchase programme for its common stock. Executive Chairman Michael Saylor said the company remains focused on expanding its Digital Credit business despite short-term market weakness.
