The XRP Ledger has crossed the 10 million mark for payments settled through the x402 protocol, highlighting the growing use of blockchain-based payments by AI agents. The milestone was reported by t54 Labs, a Ripple-backed platform focused on AI agentic payments, on Oct. 1.

The XRP Ledger AI Hub showed about 10.9 million transactions, with nearly 6,610 XRP and 9,870 RLUSD settled across 161 registered merchants. More than 600,000 x402 payments are now being settled on the XRP Ledger each day.

The latest milestone comes less than three months after the XRP Ledger crossed its first 1 million x402 payments. The rapid increase reflects growing interest in systems that allow AI agents to make payments automatically when accessing online services.

RippleX head of engineering J. Ayo Akinyele also highlighted the development on X, noting that the network had moved from 1 million to more than 10 million x402 payments in less than three months.

According to Akinyele, much of the current activity comes from AI agents paying for computing and data services. However, he said a broader range of services is beginning to appear, including financial data, risk, credit and other agent-based application programming interfaces.

The x402 system is based on the HTTP 402 “Payment Required” status code, which has existed on the internet for years but has seen limited practical use. Coinbase helped revive the concept as a way for applications to request payment automatically.

Under the system, a service can provide its price and payment instructions. An AI agent can then make an on-chain payment and retry the request without requiring a traditional checkout process, stored card or direct human approval. On the XRP Ledger, payments can be settled using XRP or RLUSD, Ripple’s dollar-pegged stablecoin.

XRP Ledger support for x402 was contributed by t54 Labs and included in Ripple’s XRPL AI Starter Kit released in June. Ripple is also a premier member of the Linux Foundation’s x402 Foundation, alongside companies including Coinbase, Circle, AWS, Google, Mastercard, Stripe and Visa.

The technology is aimed at a future in which AI agents can independently discover online services, pay for them and consume the requested data or computing resources.

Ripple has also expanded its work around machine payments. The company recently integrated XRP and RLUSD support for AI agent payments on Stripe and Tempo’s Machine Payments Protocol, enabling automated payments for data, computing and other online services.

The growing transaction count does not necessarily mean all activity represents large financial transfers. The XRP Ledger AI Hub data shows that the 10.9 million transactions involved relatively modest amounts of XRP and RLUSD spread across the registered merchants.

XRP was trading near $1.50 at the time of the report after facing resistance around $1.60. Its 24-hour trading range was roughly $1.48 to $1.54, while trading volume had fallen by nearly 20%.

Data from CoinGlass showed XRP futures open interest at around $3.57 billion, although short-term movements in open interest remained mixed.

Meanwhile, RLUSD supply has continued to grow. The stablecoin recently reached around $2.55 billion, according to the source material, representing an increase of nearly 90% since the start of 2026.

The rapid growth of x402 payments gives the XRP Ledger another potential use case beyond conventional cryptocurrency transfers. As AI systems become more capable of interacting with online services independently, automated blockchain payments could become part of the infrastructure supporting these machine-to-machine transactions.
