Tether is preparing to relaunch its USDT stablecoin on the Bitcoin network in October 2026, returning to the blockchain 12 years after its original launch.
USDT Shifted Away From Bitcoin Over The Years
USDT is currently the world’s largest stablecoin, with a value of around $184 billion, and is designed to maintain a value of $1. The planned integration would bring the stablecoin back to Bitcoin after years in which its activity shifted toward other blockchain networks.
Tether originally launched USDT on Bitcoin in 2014 using the Omni protocol. The protocol recorded USDT tokens directly on the Bitcoin blockchain. Over time, however, Tether increasingly moved its activity to networks such as Tron and Ethereum, where transactions could be conducted using networks that were faster and cheaper for users.
The planned return therefore represents a new connection between Bitcoin and the stablecoin. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino highlighted the significance of the move with the phrase, “It’s coming home.”
Utexo To Issue USDT Under New Integration
This latest integration will involve Utexo, a company backed by Tether. Utexo holds a license to distribute USDT under Tether’s brand through exchanges, wallets and payment providers, and will issue USDT as part of the new integration.
The move raises questions about whether bringing USDT back to Bitcoin could strengthen the blockchain’s role in payments and stablecoin activity. Bitcoin was the original network for USDT, but the stablecoin’s growth in subsequent years has largely taken place across other blockchain ecosystems.
Return Expands Rather Than Replaces Existing Networks
The planned October 2026 relaunch would therefore reconnect the largest stablecoin with the blockchain where it first began.
For Tether, the move also represents an expansion of USDT’s presence across different blockchain networks. Rather than replacing its existing activity on networks such as Tron and Ethereum, the Bitcoin integration would add another environment for USDT distribution.
The return comes 12 years after the original 2014 launch, making the development a notable moment in the history of both Tether and Bitcoin.
