Pi Network has begun implementing Protocol 26, which mandates that all operators of Mainnet nodes upgrade their software by August 11 in order to avoid being cut off from the blockchain.

As part of the network’s continuing Mainnet transition, the Pi Core Team announced the launch of Protocol 26 in an X post on Wednesday. The team stated, “To stay connected to the network, all Mainnet node operators must finish the upgrade before the deadline.”

The team claims that Protocol 26 is one of the last protocol updates before Protocol 27, which is anticipated to finish the current round of network enhancements.

The most recent development in Pi Network’s continuous endeavor to update its Mainnet architecture is Protocol 26. The project launched Protocol 25 earlier this year, and in order to preserve network compatibility, node operators must update by June 18. Pi at the time explained the upgrade as a component of a larger plan aimed at enhancing long-term network stability and decentralization.

Since then, the blockchain has successfully upgraded eight protocols, with Protocol 26 becoming the ninth, according to the Core Team. The statement states that the present protocol transition will be finished with just one more significant update, Protocol 27.

The team said, “Protocol 26 is a significant milestone ahead of the final planned upgrade, Protocol 27.”

Mainnet nodes are in charge of assisting in the validation of blockchain activities, in contrast to Pi’s mobile application. Pi’s developer documentation states that once Protocol 26 is required, nodes with out-of-date software won’t stay synced.

According to the project, operators will be cut off from the Mainnet until they install the most recent version if they don’t update by the August 11 deadline. Rather than regular mobile miners, the upgrade mainly impacts users using Pi Mainnet nodes.

Pi Network employs the Stellar Consensus Protocol (SCP), in contrast to Bitcoin and a number of other significant blockchains that rely on Proof-of-Work mining. Instead of competing to solve computational challenges, nodes in this paradigm obtain consensus using trusted quorum slices.

Pi’s documentation states that by enabling nodes to operate using desktop software rather than requiring specialist mining gear, the initiative aims to make node participation accessible to regular people. Three degrees of engagement are now supported by the ecosystem: supernodes, mainnet nodes, and desktop app users.

Ordinary nodes check blockchain activity and forward transactions around the network, whereas SuperNodes take part directly in consensus.

The launch coincides with Pi Network’s ongoing Mainnet infrastructure expansion through a number of protocol enhancements. The update is another step toward finishing the network’s current upgrade roadmap ahead of the scheduled release of Protocol 27, even though Protocol 26 primarily targets node operators.

Making sure Mainnet node operators finish the Protocol 26 upgrade by the August 11 deadline is now the top priority in order to preserve network connection.
