Key Takeaways

  • Vitalik Buterin shared a big plan to improve Ethereum. He may replace the Ethereum Virtual Machine with a new RISC-V system.
  • This change can make Ethereum faster, cheaper, and easier to use. It can also lower proof costs and help zero-knowledge proofs work better.
  • The team will not rush. They will move step by step and keep old apps safe. Developers can learn new tools and build better smart contracts.

CUT THE COST, BOOST THE HOST, ETHEREUM GOES RISC-V MOST.

Could this change make ETH stronger than ever before? Vitalik said state tree and EVM problems cause over 80% of proof costs today. Vitalik Buterin presented a fresh concept to enhance Ethereum. According to him, Ethereum may switch to a new RISC-V-based system in place of its current one, known as the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).

This strategy is a part of a larger network makeover. The objective is straightforward. Ethereum aims to improve its speed, affordability, and use.

From EVM to RISC-V

The EVM currently uses Ethereum to run smart contracts. Small computer programs are known as smart contracts. They facilitate the usage of DeFi apps, NFT trading, and crypto transfers.

The EVM has been operational for a long time. However, it has grown increasingly complicated over time. According to some developers, it is difficult to grow and use. Vitalik thinks RISC-V can assist in resolving this issue.

A simple and open computer language is called RISC-V, Reduced Instruction Set Computing (RISC) and the “V” represents the fifth version of the RISC architecture.

It is already widely used by developers. It is clear and simple to comprehend. According to Vitalik, a RISC-V interpreter can be quite compact. Only a few hundred lines of code might be required. That, in his opinion, is how a blockchain system should feel, simple.

Why ETH Wants Fewer Special Rules

This modification might aid zero-knowledge proofs. Without disclosing all the information, these proofs assist users in demonstrating the veracity of a claim. RISC-V is already widely used in various proving systems today. The system can function more effectively and quickly if Ethereum additionally employs RISC-V.

Vitalik further stated that this new architecture may decrease the requirement for specific tools known as precompilers. Many unique rules may be eliminated with an improved virtual machine. The network may become cleaner and simpler to manage as a result.

Ethereum won’t make all the changes at once. The plan outlines a methodical approach. First, Ethereum might provide unique functionality for the new RISC-V architecture. Developers can then use RISC-V to directly design new smart contracts. The previous EVM will continue to function during this period.

Conclusion

Ethereum may completely retire the EVM in the last phase. Vitalik Buterin wants the network to be more affordable, quicker, and simpler for everyone. High proof costs might be reduced, and slow sections could be fixed using a new RISC-V system. It will take time for this shift to occur.

The group will take it step by step and protect the older apps. Developers can create better smart contracts by learning new tools. Users can benefit from rapid and inexpensive transactions. Ethereum has the potential to develop and benefit millions more people in the future if this approach is successful.
