ChatGPT: Artificial Intelligence Or Apocalypse?

By Kapil Rajyaguru

With Geoffrey Hinton, the 75-year-old British expatriate, who spent his lifetime into developing Artificial Intelligence and its systems quitting Google and himself turning against his very own invention saying that it is no less than a threat to mankind, the question that has hit global policy makers in the face is: Is ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE the boon or bane for humanity?

Is AI the next frontier of synergy between man and machine or is it an Armageddon waiting to eradicate the very existence of mankind from our blue little planet? Why does the AI explosion sound like the detonation of the first Atom Bomb by Oppenheimer? Is it like holding the heat of a blazing Sun into the palms of human beings, too hot and fiery to be handled by humans?

Chat GPT is a large language model created by OpenAI released on November, 30, 2022. It is built on top of OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 foundational large language models. This model is believed to have been fed information and data analytics which will take a normal human being at least 20,000 years even if if he reads it 24×7 and is able to make sense of it. No wonder, initially some perceived it to be panacea for all evils. It is turning out to be exactly the opposite!

So is AI like the SKYNET of Terminator which becomes sentient and super intelligent that one day it decides to eradicate its creators… the humans…

But the cons perhaps far outweigh the pros, and hence many countries in the European Union are developing rules regarding AI that sort its potential uses from high risk to low. High risk systems could include those that deal with employment, or public services, or those that put the life and health of citizens at risk. And AI of these types would be subject to strict obligations before they could be put onto the market.

Governments across the globe have been quick to realize that unless they are quick and careful, AI could end up wiping off the under-privileged, create a huge ecological imbalance amongst mankind, nature, and its habitat, causing global chaos.
