Haptics: Now You Can Feel The Virtual

By Vishakha Thakur

Virtual reality experiences can be impressively realistic and what makes these experiences even more realistic is the haptic technology. Meta recently launched its VR Haptic Gloves which lets you feel the virtual reality metaverse. Haptic technology has made it possible to investigate the human sense of touch world by allowing the creation of carefully controlled haptic virtual objects.

What is Haptic Technology?

The science of transmitting and understanding information through the sense of touch is known as haptics. Haptic technology refers to the mechanism that stimulates the sense of touch and is responsible for information transmission, while haptic feedback refers to the information conveyed.

When you hold down an app on your iPhone and feel a pull, it’s because haptic technology is communicating with your brain through touch, allowing you to move the app around on your home screen, delete it, or add it to a category of apps.

The skin is a complex organ that contains an enormous number of nerve endings and touch receptors that form the somatosensory system. All sensations we feel are relayed to the brain by the somatosensory system. Similar to how graphics and audio use a person’s sense of sight and sound to convey information, haptics use a person’s somatosensory system to provide context and communicate specific information.

How Does Haptic Technology Work?

Haptic technology generates haptic feedback by combining force, vibration, and motion. When interacting with something that contains haptic technology, these sensations are what target the user’s sense of touch. Haptic technology has infiltrated every aspect of the techno world and hence will continue to be implemented in multiple fields, devices and products for years to come.
