SEC May Introduce Framework For Tokenized Stocks As Wall Street Push Grows

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission may soon introduce new rules for tokenized stocks, according to recent reports. This could help more people adopt blockchain-based securities trading.

Bloomberg Law says the SEC is looking at an “innovation exemption” that would let trading platforms offer tokenized versions of public stocks with fewer regulations. The proposal could come as soon as this week.

Tokenized stocks are digital versions of regular stocks on the blockchain. Supporters think they can modernize markets by making settlement faster, cutting costs, and allowing trading at any time.

This shows that traditional financial institutions are starting to use blockchain more. Big firms like Nasdaq, Intercontinental Exchange, and the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation are already working on tokenized securities projects.

DTCC plans to start limited trading of tokenized assets later this year. Nasdaq is also working on a system for blockchain-based shares that keep traditional ownership rights.

SEC Chair Paul Atkins recently said he supports clearer rules for blockchain trading systems and digital asset custody. He noted that current securities laws were not made for systems where trading, clearing, and settlement all happen on one blockchain.

Supporters think tokenized securities could change global equity markets by making trading easier and more efficient. Critics, though, worry about investor protection, liquidity issues, and regulation.
