Anatoly Yakovenko says Solana’s big upcoming network upgrade, called Alpenglow, could launch as soon as next quarter and may be one of the blockchain’s most important technical milestones.

At Consensus 2026 in Miami, Yakovenko called Alpenglow a major step forward for Solana. The upgrade aims to make the blockchain faster, more predictable, and more secure at its core.

Blockchains depend on many computers agreeing on transaction order, which can sometimes cause delays or uncertainty. Yakovenko said Alpenglow is designed to cut these delays by improving how transactions are confirmed.

He explained that the new system aims to get close to the physical speed limits of information transfer worldwide. For users and developers, this should mean much faster transaction finality and better reliability for apps built on Solana.

The upgrade keeps Solana’s focus on high transaction throughput, but now puts more emphasis on timing consistency and network guarantees. This matters most for financial apps, where even milliseconds can affect trades, payments, and other sensitive tasks.

If it works as planned, Alpenglow could help Solana become a top choice for global financial systems that need both speed and reliability.
