Indian Railways Takes Mahakumbh To The Blockchain With NFT Tickets

By Kapil Rajyaguru

In a groundbreaking fusion of culture and technology, Indian Railways is set to embark on a revolutionary journey with its introduction of non-fungible token (NFT)-based train tickets for the world’s largest religious gathering, the 45-day Mahakumbh Mela at the holy city of Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh between January 13 to February 26. This unprecedented move is a testament to India’s commitment to embracing digital innovation while preserving its rich cultural heritage.

The MahaKumbh Mela, listed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, has seen participation from celebrities such as Richard Gere, director David Lynch, and the Dalai Lama. The 2025 pilgrimage is set to be even more notable, with Laurene Jobs, the widow of Apple founder Steve Jobs, expected to attend.

Indian Railways has partnered with blockchain firm Chaincode Consulting to digitize the Kumbh Mela experience for travelers, leveraging the Polygon blockchain for NFT ticketing. The fast and efficient Polygon network, known for its low gas fees and scalability, ensures that this innovative initiative remains environmentally sustainable while catering to a massive influx of pilgrims.

The blockchain-powered NFT tickets will be minted over the Polygon platform and managed through the NFTtrace system, offering traceability and security for every ticket issued.

With approximately 1.2 million tickets booked daily on the IRCTC website, the NFT-based tickets are poised to provide not only a secure and verifiable journey for passengers but also a tangible piece of digital memorabilia for millions attending the event.

This new chapter in the cultural journey is not India’s first NFT venture. In March 2024, Indian Railways launched a limited-time NFT ticketing initiative for the Holi festival.

The Mahakumbh, that attracts millions of devotees from across the globe, is a more special event this time since it’s occurring after 144 years as per the significance of specific planetary alignment. It marks the completion of 12 Kumbh Mela cycles and holds immense importance for the Hindus, who flock to the riverbank for a holy dip at the Sangam—the confluence of the highly-revered rivers, namely, the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati.

The UP government is expecting a footfall of more than 40 crore devotees from across the world that is expected to generate Rs 2 lakh crore in economic growth. The state has initiated 549 projects, spanning infrastructure development to sanitation, with a budget of Rs 6,990 crore for the Maha Kumbh.

With India blending its age-old cultural tradition with blockchain innovation, using NFT train tickets for the MahaKumbh Mela, a new era in spiritual journey begins, raising excitement for future cultural-tech advancements.
