The highly anticipated Ethereum (ETH) upgrade is almost around the corner, and nothing can make crypto enthusiasts more excited!

Are you also one in the league? Then you must be aware of the Dencun upgrade, also famously known as the Cancun-Deneb (Dencun).

However, if you are not already aware, worry not, as this blog has all the information you need about the ETH upgrade. Read on!

Ethereum Dencun Upgrade – Getting to Know!

Blockchains are designed on three principles: decentralization, security, and scalability. While the first two principles are emphasized much upon, it’s the scalability that is compromised – famously called the “Blockchain Trilemma”.

In the case of Ethereum as well, the scalability component is compromised, causing the Ethereum blockchain to suffer from a “Scalability Trilemma.”

The much-awaited Dencun upgrade is a forthcoming Ethereum upgrade that promises to address the “Scalability Trilemma.”

The reason for the upgrade?

It aims to solve network overload, ease transaction congestion, and offer lower gas fees

The Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has stated that the new ETH upgrade will mark “The Surge” era in Ethereum’s developmental roadmap. He mentioned that the goal of the upgrade is to hit 10,000 transactions per second, thereby eliminating the scalability bottlenecks.

The Dencun upgrade will be executed through a series of Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIP). Proto-danksharding is the key upgrade among the nine planned EIPs. Its primary aim is to facilitate layer-2 rollups, thereby causing lower gas fees.

4 Ways How Dencun Upgrade can Benefit Ethereum

The Ethereum network is expected to benefit in multiple ways with the Dencun upgrade. Here are some prominent benefits of the ETH Dencun upgrade.

  • Low Gas Fees: The proto-danksharding will introduce blob-carrying transactions – a new type of transaction. Such transactions are similar to normal ones except that they can handle more data compared to current call data. However, these transaction blobs are less costly, thereby making them a cost-effective solution for reducing gas fees.

  • Greater Scalability: One of the primary goals of the Dencun upgrade is to resolve the “Scalability Trilemma” of Ethereum. Through proto-danksharding, more temporary storage space will be added to layer-2 rollups. Thus, the process is expected to help the network attain higher transactional volume.

  • Enhanced Cross-Chain Communication: Among the 9 EIPs for the upgrade, EIP-4788 will enable seamless and safer interactions across various blockchain networks. Such designs of cross-chain bridges will enhance interoperability with layer-2 solutions.

  • Higher Data Storage: EIP-1153 implemented for the Dencun upgrade is aimed at optimizing the network’s data storage. Does that mean that it will only result in greater storage capacity? Well, no! It will also reduce the cost of storing on-chain data and increase block space.

Summing it Up!

Ethereum’s Dencun upgrade is expected to go live on March 13, 2024. The blockchain experts believe that a successful implementation of the upgrade will reduce the rollup costs by 10X.

Since Ethereum’s Shapella upgrade in 2023, the Dencun upgrade is considered the most significant. Focusing on the efficiency and scalability of the Ethereum network, this upgrade is indeed going to be a significant one.

Ethereum aims for consistent improvements to become a scalable and resilient platform. The successful Dencun upgrade will propel Ethereum to a higher stage of network efficiency.
