Japan Turns to AI-Based Robots For Agriculture

Japanese technology firm Agrist Inc. has developed a robot to handle labor-intensive tasks in agriculture, particularly for greenhouse farmers. The robot, designed to harvest cucumbers on a farm in Hanyu, Saitama Prefecture, demonstrated competence in determining cucumber ripeness using a camera and pre-fed training data.

The head of the farm, Takeshi Yoshida, noted that the robot exceeded expectations and that there is still room for improvement. Agrist’s robot can harvest one to three spheres every two minutes, with potential areas for improvement in speed. The company is confident that more greenhouse farms across Japan will rely on its AI-based robot for harvests, especially as the country faces a labor shortage.
